The Penn Compact in Asia

After traveling earlier this year to India, Amy Gutmann recently returned from another leg of her Penn Compact World Tour. This time her travels for Penn took her to Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing.

In Hong Kong Gutmann spoke under the auspices of the Asia Society. She also spoke at a Penn Club of Hong Kong fund-raising dinner to benefit its scholarship foundation and was hosted at the China Club by Mr. & Mrs. Po Chung for a parents reception. On March 12 the Penn Club of Singapore welcomed Gutmann to a high tea reception at the Equinox Complex which, says Managing Director of International Operations for Development and Alumni Relations Edward Resovsky, was a big success, despite an air conditioning malfunction

In Beijing, an all-alumni reception was held at St. Regis Hotel. More than 100 alumni, parents and faculty attended the cocktail reception prior to Gutmann’s program. Gutmann and Gary Hack, dean of Penn Design, also joined other Penn professors and students to announce a partnership between Tsinghua University and Penn Design that will result in the building of a new “energy efficiency center” at Tsinghua. While in Beijing, Gutmann and husband Michael Doyle met with Chinese Foreign Minister Zhaoxing Li and Mrs Xiaomei Li, PAR’01, as well as other officials including Chinese Vice Premier Chen Zhili.
