Novelist Susan Cheever to Visit Penn as 2011 Kelly Writers House Fellow Feb. 14-15
PHILADELPHIA – Novelist and non-fiction writer Susan Cheever is the first of three acclaimed writers slated to visit the University of Pennsylvania as Spring 2011 Fellows at Kelly Writers House. Cheever will be on campus Feb. 14-15.

Sideline Test Accurately Detects Athletes’ Concussions in Minutes, Penn Study Shows
PHILADELPHIA – A simple test performed at the sideline of sporting events can accurately detect concussions in athletes, according to study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Current sideline tests can leave a wide amount a brain function untested following concussion. Penn researchers showed that this method adds to current methods and accurately and reliably identified athletes with head trauma. The study appears online now in Neurology.

Penn Reports Economic Impact of $14 Billion on Pennsylvania, $9.5 Billion on Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA –- The University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine contribute $14 billion yearly, or $38 million per day, to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and $9.5 billion, or $26 million per day, to the City of Philadelphia. The 2010 economic and fiscal impact of the university is outlined in a new independent report conducted by Econsult Corp. of Philadelphia.

Mask and Wig: Behind the Scenes
Penn’s Mask and Wig Club is an all-male comedy troupe that has entertained Philadelphians and the Penn community since 1889 with its original revues, often featuring men dressed up as women. At the time of Mask and Wig’s founding, most colleges were open only to men, so the troupe’s cast was all male. Due to the popularity of burlesque during that era, the club adopted the genre.

Three Penn Professors Named AAAS Fellows
PHILADELPHIA – Three faculty members at the University of Pennsylvania have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They are James C. Alwine, professor of cancer biology; Gideon Dreyfuss, Issac Norris Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator; and John C. Trueswell, professor of psychology. Fellows of AAAS are selected for their contributions to science and technology and will be recognized at the Fellows Forum on Feb. 19 during the AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

2011 Thouron Awardees Are Selected
CURF is proud to announce a Penn record-tying 7 Thouron Award winners! Grace Ambrose will graduate in 2011 from the College of Arts & Sciences with a BA in the History of Art, as well as a minor in Creative Writing. She has worked at the Whitney Museum in New York and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, and plans to study Curation while in the UK.
