Horse-Dragon and Colossal Iguana: Penn Grad Student, Others Identify New Beaked Herbivorous Dinosaurs
PHILADELPHIA – Paleontologists from the University of Pennsylvania and the Utah Geological Survey have described two skeletons representing two new species of beaked herbivorous dinosaurs, known as iguanodonts, from Utah. The new dinosaurs were preserved in rocks dating to the Early Cretaceous Epoch, ~145.5 – 99.6 million years ago. The new specimens help illuminate the natural history of North American iguanodonts.

Alumni event in Atlanta focuses on bioethics
Penn President Amy Gutmann was joined by Emory University President James W. Wagner on Nov. 16 for Penn’s first-ever alumni event featuring two university presidents. The conversation, “Universities on the Leading Edge: Advancing Dialogue on Bioethics,” capped off a two-day meeting of the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, which Gutmann chairs in partnership with Wagner, who serves as vice-chair.

Process Leading to Protein Diversity in Cells Important for Proper Neuron Firing
PHILADELPHIA – Cells have their own version of the cut-and-paste editing function called splicing. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have documented a novel form of splicing in the cytoplasm of a nerve cell, which dictates a special form of a potassium channel protein in the outer membrane. The channel protein is found in the dendrites of hippocampus cells -- the seat of memory, learning, and spatial navigation -- and is involved in coordinating the electrical firing of nerve cells.

Penn Research Indicates Light Bending by a Black Hole May Offer Proof of Extra Dimensions
PHILADELPHIA –- Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania report that a new test for measuring the ability of gravity to bend light seen from distant stars around large objects like black holes may offer proof of the existence of extra dimensions in the universe.
