Two From Penn Win Marshall Scholarships
PHILADELPHIA – Two University of Pennsylvania seniors, Kristin Hall and GJ Melendez-Torres, have won Marshall Scholarships.
Hall, a student in the Huntsman Program, will graduate in 2011 with a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School and a B.A. in international studies and a minor in mathematics from the School of Arts and Sciences. She plans to study financial and development economics at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Hall previously received the Goldman Sachs Global Leader Scholarship and the Kathryn W. Davis 100 Projects for Peace award.
GJ Melendez-Torres, a student in the joint Nursing and Health Care Program, will graduate in 2011 with a B.S. in economics in health-care management and policy from the Wharton School and a B.S. from the School of Nursing. At Oxford, Melendez-Torres will study for the M.Phil. in evidence-based social intervention. He was also a recipient of a Truman Scholarship.
The Marshall Scholarships were established by the British government in 1953. As many as 40 scholarships are offered each year, five for each of eight regions of the United States.
The scholarship, which pays overseas transportation and all tuition and fees plus a personal allowance can be used for two years and in some cases can be renewed for a third year. The scholarship is for study at any university in the United Kingdom.
