PHILADELPHIA -- "Authentic Happiness," the latest book by University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin E.P. Seligman, has been named Books for a Better Life's "Best Psychology Book" of 2002. The Books for a Better Life awards, presented by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, pay tribute to the popular category of books labeled "self-help," "motivational," "self-improvement" or "advice."

PHILADELPHIA -- Schools in West Philadelphia will be supported by a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to boost their mathematics and science curricula in grades K-12. An original grant to the University of Pennsylvania's Mathematics Department from NSF four years ago founded Access Science, an academically based community service project supported by Penn's Center for Community Partnerships. The new funding, which is approximately $500,000 for three years, will allow Access Science to continue through 2006.

Two Penn scholars have been named 2003 recipients of the Benjamin Franklin Medal, one of the world’s oldest science and technology awards. Professor of Chemistry Robin M. Hochstrasser and Research Professor of Physics Raymond Davis Jr. are among 10 American scientists being honored by The Franklin Institute for their work in aviation, chemistry, civil engineering, computers and cognitive science, earth sciences, electrical engineering, life sciences and physics.
