The World of the Kabuki Artist on Stage at Penn
PHILADELPHIA-- A rare, behind-the-scenes look into the world of the Japanese Kabuki artist will take place on the University of Pennsylvania campus when the show "Onnagata: the Making of a Woman" is staged Sept. 17 at 7 p.m in Houston Hall's Class of '49 Auditorium at 34th and Spruce streets. Ayako Kano, professor of modern Japanese literature at Penn and author of "Acting like a Woman in Modern Japan: Theater, Gender, and Nationalism," will give a pre-performance lecture.

Study Finds Dogs Fed a Reduced-Calorie Diet Live Nearly Two Years Longer than Dogs on Unrestricted Diet
PHILADELPHIA – A 14-year study of canine diet and health has found that dogs fed a calorie-restricted diet live a median 1.8 years longer than dogs allowed to eat more and are slower to develop chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis.The findings add to the growing body of evidence that caloric restriction in a wide range of species significantly boosts longevity. Dogs are the only large mammals – and the closest human relatives – for which a diet-restriction study has been completed. Similar studies involving primates are ongoing.

Penn's Veterans Upward Bound Program Prepares Military Veterans for College
PHILADELPHIA -- Heading to college can be daunting for students of any age but imagine going back to into the classroom more than 20 years after graduating from high school. The Veterans Upward Bound program at the University of Pennsylvania makes the transition smoother for military veterans with free college-preparatory classes."We give them the academic resources they need to be successful in college," said Diane Sandefur, director of the VUB program at Penn.

Starr has been appointed executive director of the Center for Organizational Dynamics and director of the Organizational Dynamics degree programs at the University of Pennsylvania. He was previously director of the Organizational Development and Leadership program at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the Organizational Dynamics program offers graduate degrees to working professionals through the School of Arts and Sciences.

Major General Clifford Stanley Named Executive Vice President at the University of Pennsylvania
PHILADELPHIA -- Major General Clifford L. Stanley, Deputy Commanding General, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, has been named Executive Vice President at the University of Pennsylvania, according to an announcement today by Penn President Judith Rodin. He will begin his new position in mid-October.
