Penn Students Reach Out to Hancock County, "the Forgotten Part of the Katrina Disaster"
PHILADELPHIA - Two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, residents of Hancock County, Miss., continue to suffer from a mental-health and social-services crisis, and students and alumni from the University of Pennsylvania have stepped in to lend a hand.The people from Penn are traveling to a region where suicides, suicide attempts, child abuse and domestic violence have skyrocketed and where there has been a surge in reported cases of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Penn's Field Center Hosts Documentary Film Festival on Child Abuse, Part of National Child-Welfare Conference
PHILADELPHIA - The winners have been announced in the University of Pennsylvania's Field Center for Children's Policy, Practice & Research's documentary film contest, a part of National Child Abuse Prevention month. A panel of expert judges, including producers from CNN, the Greater Philadelphia Film Office and award-winning documentary filmmakers, judged the high school and college submissions.

Penn Hosts National Conference on Domestic Violence
PHILADELPHIA -- In partnership with the Philadelphia Mayor's domestic violence task force, The University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work is hosting its second conference on domestic violence, "Finding New Directions for Responding to Intimate Violence," June 25-26, at Jon M. Huntsman Hall, 3730 Walnut St.The conference is part of the mayor's initiative to address the issue after a 20 percent increase in domestic violence calls to 911 last year and the murders last summer of eight Philadelphia women, including a police officer, by their partners.

Changes in Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect Cases Improve Police Attitudes
PHILADELPHIA -- Transferring responsibility for investigating reports of child maltreatment from child-welfare agencies to sheriffs' offices in Florida led to an improvement in attitudes among law-enforcement officers and caseworkers. Researchers at the School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania found that law-enforcement officers became more aware of the social services available to children. They also became better attuned to the connection between child maltreatment and poverty.

Play Ball!
Each summer, faculty and staff members from the School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania bring their sense of cooperation and collaboration onto the softball field. No matter their skill level, the players enjoy some active time together and the opportunity to strengthen their partnerships during a few sunny afternoons at Penn Park. These SP2 summer softball games have been happening since 2013.

A 2021 Rhodes Scholar for Penn
May graduate Mackenzie Fierceton from St. Louis been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for graduate study at the University of Oxford in England. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and is currently completing her master’s degree in clinical social work.
