PHILADELPHIA Scientists at the Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory have announced the precision measurement of extremely rapid transitions between matter and antimatter. The observations were made at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, representing a massive collaborative effort involving 700 researchers from 61 institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania.

PHILADELPHIA -- Research studies, based at the University of Pennsylvania, demonstrate that biodegradable nano-particles containing two potent cancer-fighting drugs are effective in killing human breast tumors. The unique properties of the hollow shell nano-particles, known as polymersomes, allow them to deliver two distinct drugs, paclitaxel, the leading cancer drug known by brand names such as Taxol, and doxorubicin directly to tumors implanted in mice.

The same signal responsible for promoting the type of immune responses that cause asthma and allergy can also limit the type of inflammation associated with debilitating diseases like inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis and multiple sclerosis, according to researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. The researchers discovered how IL-25, a signaling protein known as a cytokine, both prevents destructive inflammation and promotes immune responses associated with asthma and allergic responses.

WHAT: MERT is a student-developed, student-operated emergency medical response team at the University of Pennsylvania that has been trained to respond to medical emergencies on campus.The team members will be dispatched by the Division of Public Safety's PennComm Center and will respond via bicycles equipped with oxygen, defibrillators and other emergency medical supplies.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Presbyterian Foundation for Philadelphia has announced a $1 million grant to create the Kass Endowed Scholarship program for the gerontology nurse practitioner master program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. The Foundation and its subsidiary, NewCourtland Elder Services, a network of Philadelphia nursing homes, housing and programs for frail elders throughout Philadelphia, will work with Penn Nursing to oversee the scholarship program.

PHILADELPHIA -- Ralph Brinster, a professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, will be awarded the Gairdner Foundation International Award on Oct. 26 in Toronto. Brinster is receiving the award for his "pioneering discoveries in germ line modification in mammals."

PHILADELPHIA -- Under a new agreement, the University of Pennsylvania will now purchase nearly 30 percent of its energy needs from wind-generated power, nearly tripling its wind-energy purchase. Following a previous wind-energy purchase of 40,000 megawatt-hours annually from Pennsylvania wind farms, Penn's new agreement to purchase 112,000 MWh each year for the next five years from wind farms across the country represents the largest retail purchase of green power in the nation by an institution of higher education.

PHILADELPHIA -- Students at West Philadelphia's Sayre High School who are taking a class on medical intake procedures have been working alongside University of Pennsylvania nurse practitioner students and nursing faculty to learn accurate growth assessment.Together, they have been assessing the height and weight of elementary school-aged children in the Beacon after-school program at Sayre.Nursing Professor Terri Lipman has been supervising this partnership project, funded through the Penn Center for Community Partnerships.
