Designer of Penn's Weave Bridge Will Be on Hand for Ribbon-cutting, Dedication Thursday, May 7
WHAT:A dedication/ribbon-cutting for the Weave Bridge that provides pedestrian access over the Amtrak rail lines from the main portion of the University of Pennsylvania campus to the athletic fields and ROTC center at the Hollenback Center.The Weave Bridge is the first structure in the Penn Connects campus development plan to be finished.WHO:Penn President Amy Gutmann will be joined by Cecil Balmond, world-renowned structural engineer and designer of the unique bridge, as well as local elected officials, city employees and Penn staff.WHERE:

Living Independently For Elders to Honor Its Founders
PHILADELPHIA — The Living Independently For Elders program of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing will honor its four founders at a wine and cheese reception on Monday, May 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the LIFE center, 4508 Chestnut St.LIFE allows low-income seniors who would otherwise need nursing-home care the option to remain in their homes and receive all preventative, primary, acute and long-term health services at the LIFE center.

Living Independently for Elders Celebrates 10 Years of Caring for Seniors in West Philadelphia With Block Party
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing’s Living Independently for Elders program will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a neighborhood party on Saturday, May 16. from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4508 Chestnut St. Since 1998, LIFE has provided all-inclusive health care to more than 650 Southwest and West Philadelphia seniors.

Youth Chefs, Gardeners Host 2nd Annual Eats and Beats Dinner to Benefit the Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative

Penn IUR Honors Leaders in Urban Affairs at the Fifth Annual Urban Leadership Forum
PHILADELPHIA – Three urban leaders have been honored by the Penn Institute for Urban Research at the 5th Annual Urban Leadership Forum, “Building Competitive and Sustainable Cities,” at the University of Pennsylvania. Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, former Maryland Gov. Parris Glendening and Bruce Katz of the Brookings Institution were singled out as exemplary leaders guiding cities toward a sustainable future.

Out of Africa: Penn Geneticist Publishes Largest-Ever Study on African Genetics Revealing Origins, Migration
PHILADELPHIA –- African, American, and European researchers working in a 10-year collaboration have released the largest-ever study of African genetic data — more than 4 million genotypes — providing a library of new information on the continent which is thought to be the source of the oldest settlements of modern humans. The study was led by Sarah Tishkoff, the David and Lyn Silfen University Associate Professor of the University of Pennsylvania.
