Scott Damrauer of the Perelman School of Medicine authored a study that found that LDL cholesterol, often called “bad” cholesterol, may contribute to venous thromboembolism, which causes potentially dangerous blood clots in the limbs. “This study shows how we can use genetics to try to more accurately understand who will go on to develop venous thromboembolism and who will not,” he said.

Amy Forrestel of the Perelman School of Medicine spoke about the symptoms, spread, and long-term effects of syphilis. If left untreated, the sexually transmitted infection “can wreak a lot of havoc” on the body, said Forrestel.

The Perelman School of Medicine’s Diego Mazzotti spoke about his research on sleep apnea and cardiovascular risk. “Even without further research, clinicians should recognize that patients with obstructive sleep apnea who complain of feeling tired when they wake up and sleepy during the day are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease,” Mazzotti said.

The Perelman School of Medicine’s Michael Perlis recommended cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). However, he noted, its administration is best left to the professionals. “Those that try to do CBT-I to themselves are likely to not be successful,” Perlis said. “But worse is that they will believe that they’ve been there, done that, and so the likelihood of seeking out professionally administered CBT-I goes way down.”

The Law School’s Cary Coglianese weighed in on the legality of the government approving drilling applications in spite of the shutdown. “It would appear that that is illegal, and technically it’s something that would be subject to criminal sanctions,” said Coglianese. “Of course that would require someone from the Justice Department initiating a criminal action, which it’s hard to imagine they would do that.”
