With a new movie theater—the Bridge: Cinema De Lux—on campus, we at the Current wondered what the Penn community would to like to see on the big screens. Would it be the latest Hollywood blockbuster? Or perhaps something more off the beaten track? Read on to find out.

“The types of movies I would book would be: ‘The Long Walk Home’ with Whoopi Goldberg and Sissy Spacek, ‘Breaking Away’ and ‘MASH.’

I would book ‘The Long Walk Home’ because it is moving, poignant, and thoughtful. It always reminds me of the importance of standing up for what you believe in.”

“I love movies from the 1940s and 1950s, so I would bring movies like ‘On the Waterfront’ with Marlon Brando, or ‘The Philadelphia Story’ and ‘Citizen Kane.’

The reason I would book movies from this era is because this is when filmmaking started to emerge as an art form.”

“I’d pick some of the big blockbusters because Penn has like 20,000 [students] that don’t have easy public access to movie theaters that offer those kinds of movies.

But I would also balance it with artistic films to help foster an appreciation for diverse types of expression and points of views.”
