Penn GSE Receives Grant to Improve Lives of Philadelphia Children
PHILADELPHIA – The Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania has been awarded $800,000 from the William Penn Foundation for a two-year research and service project designed to improve the lives of young children in the city.Partnering with Penn GSE on this project are the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research at the University's medical center and the Cartographic Modeling Laboratory, which is a joint venture of Penn's School of Social Work and Graduate School of Fine Arts.

Campaign tells drivers, bikers to share the road
Starting tomorrow, Penn Police officers and other area public safety personnel will remind errant motorists and bicyclists that bicycles belong on the street. The reminders are the first phase of a University City “Share the Road” campaign. Police will hand out brochures when they stop motorists and bicyclists for violating traffic laws such as traveling in or turning from a marked bike lane, riding against traffic or riding on the sidewalk.

Top-tier tech transfer According to the Penn Center for Technology Transfer’s annual report for fiscal year 2002, the University now ranks among the nation’s top-tier institutions when it comes to commercializing the products of faculty research. CTT started 12 companies, filed 349 patent applications, executed 81 option and license agreements, and made 614 material transfer agreements in 2002, a 20% increase over last year.

New Study Finds Women in Philadelphia Region Still Face Significant Inequality at Work and at Home
PHILADELPHIA – The women's movement has shattered some glass ceilings, but full-time working women in Philadelphia still earn 25 percent less than men, with the wage disparity for women in "pink collar jobs" even greater.Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Solutions for Progress joined leaders from Women's Way in releasing the Women's Way report, "A Change of Pace: Accelerating Women's Progress."

U-City cops can now talk to one another
Emergency preparedness at Penn—and the rest of University City—is getting a big boost from MERN, the Multi-agency Emergency Radio Network. Launched by the Division of Public Safety, the new system eases communication and coordination among area security agencies in the event of a major criminal event or catastrophe.

NSF recognizes new faculty
George Pappas and Talid Sinno of the Engineering School received 2002 National Science Foundation Career Awards. The Career Award is NSF’s most prestigious award for new faculty members who effectively blend research and education and are most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century.
