Campaign tells drivers, bikers to share the road
Starting tomorrow, Penn Police officers and other area public safety personnel will remind errant motorists and bicyclists that bicycles belong on the street.
The reminders are the first phase of a University City “Share the Road” campaign. Police will hand out brochures when they stop motorists and bicyclists for violating traffic laws such as traveling in or turning from a marked bike lane, riding against traffic or riding on the sidewalk.
Local institutions, including Penn, Drexel and the University City District, have organized the campaign in conjunction with PennDOT, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Council and the Bicycle Coalition of the Delaware Valley.
“What we’re trying to do is make the area safer for bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians,” said Tom Rambo, chief of police.
According to Rambo, the educational phase of the campaign would run through the spring, after which police will start enforcing the laws.
