PHILADELPHIA – Richard J. Gelles, an internationally known expert in domestic violence and child welfare and professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work, has been named dean of the School, Penn President Judith Rodin announced today. Gelles has been serving as interim dean since September 2001.

Notes on a new camp: There’s a new addition to the wide array of summer camps on campus this year. PennKids, a day camp from the Department of Recreation, offers education, games and fun, plus swimming every day, for first through sixth graders. Each of the six one-week sessions, from June 23 to Aug. 1, is organized around a theme, such as animals, world cultures, creativity, water and the Olympics. Hot lunches are included as well, and early and late extended hours are also available. Sound interesting? There’s an information session on the camp Feb.

PHILADELPHIA – – The University of Pennsylvania's Writing Program, the Creative Writing Program and the Kelly Writers House will merge resources to create an umbrella organization, the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing. The center will officially open July 1.Alan Filreis, professor of English, will head the new center with the directors of the three programs reporting to him. All of the programs will retain their individual functions.

PHILADELPHIA -- Joan Goodman wants young children to fall in love with goodness. She believes all children have an inherent generosity, and she has written a book to teach others how to develop children's potential morality. Goodman found that children learn lessons of morality best when they are involved and participating in their own instruction rather than having the lessons handed down from an authority figure.

PHILADELPHIA -- Daniel Libeskind, professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, has been chosen as a finalist for the design of the World Trade Center Project. Also serving on the Libeskind team, as the urban planner, is Gary Hack, dean of Penn's Graduate School of Fine Arts.
