Penn Social Policy & Practice and Law Faculty to Present Domestic Violence Research to Legislators
PHILADELPHIA — Susan B. Sorenson of the School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania will present research about gun policy and domestic violence to state legislators in the “Pennsylvania State Briefing: Domestic Violence,” sponsored by Women in Government on Feb. 15, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Capitol Building in Harrisburg. The event will be hosted by Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione and representatives Chelsea Wagner, Kate Harper, Lynda Schlegel-Culver, Margo Davidson and Rosemary Brown.

Fels Institute of Government Study Shows Positive Effect of Philadelphia Neighborhood Reinvestment
PHILADELPHIA – A report from the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania details the ways reclamation and redevelopment of vacant property have improved residents’ quality of life in eastern North Philadelphia. The report, “Neighborhood Stabilization and Safety in East North Philadelphia,” highlights how comprehensive strategic investment by local community developers and public agencies correlates with improvements in safety, rising incomes and an attraction of new working households.

Penn GSE Researcher Awarded $1.5 Million to Study “Models of Success” at Minority-Serving Institutions
PHILADELPHIA — Marybeth Gasman of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, has been awarded a three-year, $1.5 million grant from the Lumina Foundation for Education, USA Funds and the Kresge Foundation. Consisting of $500,000 from each of the funding agencies, the grant will be used to study “models of success” that help students finish their degrees at minority-serving institutions, including historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions and Native American tribal colleges.

Penn-Based Index Shows Rise of Asian, Latin-American, African Think Tanks; Brookings Is Top Think Tank
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s annual rankings of the world’s top think tanks puts the Brookings Institution at the top of the list as 2010 Think Tank of the Year. It was selected from 74 institutions that were nominated. The report also shows the rise of think tanks in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

”Post-Mao Dreaming: Chinese Contemporary Art” at Penn’s Arthur Ross Gallery
PHILADELPHIA — “Post-Mao Dreaming: Chinese Contemporary Art” opens at the University of Pennsylvania’s Arthur Ross Gallery on Jan. 22. Featuring 30 prints, drawings, photographs and paintings, this traveling exhibition organized by the Smith College Museum of Art offers a glimpse into the post-Cultural Revolution era in China, following Mao Zedong’s death. It was the time when Chinese artists began to shrug off the restrictions established under Maoist Communism (1949-1979) and reclaim their individuality.

Sharon Ravitch of Penn’s Graduate School of Education Named Advisor for Haitian Ministry of Education
PHILADELPHIA –- Sharon Ravitch, a senior lecturer in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, has been named senior international advisor to the Haitian Ministry of Education for its Education Reconstruction Plan, designed to rebuild the nation’s education system.Creutzer Mathurin, a senior leader in the Ministry, formalized an agreement today at Penn, solidifying Ravitch’s and GSE’s role in rebuilding the Haitian educational infrastructure.

Penn School of Social Policy & Practice Explores Venezuelan Slums With “Barrios, Vol. 1” Photo Exhibit
PHILADELPHIA –- The University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice’s Master of Science in Social Policy program will host a photographic exhibit, “Barrios, Vol. 1,”’ and a panel discussion on Thursday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at La Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St. Carlos Beltrán, a journalist, documented the everyday lives of children and families in the poorest neighborhoods in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, for six months.
