University Mourns Loss of Cameron Avant Driver

Dear members of the SP2 community,

We write today to offer support as we confirm the difficult news that Cameron Avant Driver, a part-time MSW student on track to finish his degree in 2020, passed away last night after suffering a medical emergency.

Cameron, 38, was in Foundations of Social Work Practice 1 when he had the medical episode. Classmates and faculty quickly contacted emergency professionals, including student EMTs with MERT, who responded immediately and provided tremendous care for your classmate. Unfortunately, Cameron died later in the evening at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Cameron lived in East Mt. Airy with his wife, Roxanne Logan, and stepson, Christian. He also is survived by his parents, Chere Jordan and James Avant.

Cameron had long worked as a contract specialist for the federal General Services Administration. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Cheyney University. He volunteered at Philabundance, Chosen 300 Ministries, and other nonprofit organizations.

We know this news comes as a major shock to the school community, especially to faculty and MSW students. Now, more than ever, we ask you to hold each other closely. Practice with your friends the listening, kindness, and presence you bring to your work.

We know that grief can affect people differently, at different times and stages. Penn is home to abundant resources to assist you as you process this news and your feelings.
