Study shows ‘Fluffya’ accent is steadily changing
If you say, “wooder ice,” when you order a water ice treat or scream, “Go Iggles!” when the Eagles are playing the dreaded Dallas Cowboys, chances are, you’re from Philadelphia—or as some residents call it, “Fluffya.” A new Penn linguistics study shows that traditional Southern inflections associated with Philadelphia native-born speakers are being affected by Northern influences. Give lots of love with ‘Locks of Love’
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Some individuals afflicted by the disease experience complete hair loss on the scalp. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) reports that alopecia areata, which often begins in childhood, affects nearly 2 percent of all Americans. There is no known cure or drugs approved for treatment.

Psych/Nursing Student Has Deep Roots at Penn
Even though he has never lived in Harnwell House, Tony Krumbhaar has a connection to the legendary University of Pennsylvania president that no one else on campus can claim. He is a great-grandson of Gaylord P. Harnwell, who led Penn in 1953-70. And the roots go even deeper. One of Krumbhaar’s grandfathers, his father and his brother preceded him at Penn. Perhaps that is part of why he says, “Penn is very close to my heart.”

Penn Professor Explores History of Adoption in New Book
The question caused consternation. Several decades ago when Peter Conn and his wife filled out paperwork to adopt a baby girl from Korea, one of the questions on a state government form was about the number and names of their “natural” children. “We thought about sending the Commonwealth a letter patiently explaining that, if our three biological children were natural, it meant that Jennifer was unnatural,” he recalls.

Penn to Host ‘Let’s Talk About Race’
The School of Social Policy & Practice and the African-American Resource Center at the University of Pennsylvania will host “Let’s Talk About Race” Tuesday, April 16, at 5:30 p.m. in Café 58 in Irvine Auditorium, 3401 Spruce St. The second in a series, the event is free and open to the public. It serves as a frank, interactive discussion, offering people of all races, backgrounds and beliefs a way to foster communication and create understanding.
