Three Penn Faculty Elected to the National Academy of Sciences
PHILADELPHIA — Nancy Bonini, Gideon Dreyfuss and Beatrice H. Hahn of the University of Pennsylvania have been elected members of the National Academy of Sciences, considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a U.S. scientist or engineer.

Arthur H. Rubenstein, Former Dean of Penn's Perelman School of Medicine, Receives Medal for Medical Service
Arthur H. Rubenstein, MBBCh, was awarded the highest honor of the Association of American Physicians (AAP) the George M. Kober Medal, this week at the annual joint meeting of the AAP and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Penn's Morris Arboretum Launches New Series of Children’s Programs
PHILADELPHIA -- Morris Arboretum introduces Growing Minds, new programming specifically geared to younger visitors and their families. Growing Minds will kick off in June with “Seeds to Sprouts,” a Parent & Child series of classes targeted for 2, 3 and 4 year olds. Also starting in June will be the “Mini-Morris Players,” an interactive theater program for ages 5-10 that will bring to life the history of the Morrises’ Chestnut Hill estate.

The Rotunda at Penn Listed on Philadelphia Register of Historic Places
PHILADELPHIA -- The Rotunda has been added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places by the Philadelphia Historical Commission. Collette Kinane, a graduate student in historical preservation, prepared the submission as part of PennDesign's 2011 Preservation Studio. Built in 1911 for the First Church of Christ, Scientist, the Rotunda was designed by New York-based Carrere and Hastings as classical in style, featuring a low, tile-roofed narthex, a circular main hall, also known as the sanctuary, and oversized windows.

Penn Study Confirms 2 Treatments for Age-related Macular Degeneration Provide Equal Vision Improvements
Two drugs commonly used to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD) yield similar improvements in vision for patients receiving treatments on a monthly or as-needed basis, according to a study from researchers at the Center for Preventive Ophthalmology and Biostatistics (CPOB) at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Penn Scientists Develop Large-scale Simulation of Human Blood
PHILADELPHIA — Having a virtual copy of a patient’s blood in a computer would be a boon to researchers and doctors. They could examine a simulated heart attack caused by blood clotting in a diseased coronary artery and see if a drug like aspirin would be effective in reducing the size of such a clot.

Penn Museum: Exchange of Prisoners With Metropolitan Museum of Art
When Penn Museum agreed to lend objects from its Egyptian collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their new exhibition, The Dawn of Egyptian Art (April 10 through August 5, 2012), Penn Museum’s Egyptian section curator made one special request—for a temporary “exchange of prisoners.”

Penn Pilots More Sustainability Projects Through Another Round of Green Fund Grants
PHILADELPHIA – The Penn Green Campus Partnership has awarded five Green Fund grants ranging from a comprehensive recycling center within the School of Engineering and Applied Science to a behavior-change project focusing on water conservation. This spring’s grants bring the total number of Green Fund projects to 41.

A Day in the Life of Penn, Spring 2012
Crew teams at dawn. A midday rush to food trucks along Spruce Street. An evening performance in an on-campus theater. These are just a handful of the moments, big and small, captured in the first-ever University-wide photo project, “A Day in the Life of Penn.” The endeavor, led by the Office of University Communications in partnership with PennDesign, tapped student, faculty, and staff photographers to document all aspects of campus life from sunrise to well after sunset on one day: April 12, 2012.
