Penn to Lead $10 Million Project on Computer-assisted Programming
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania will lead a $10 Million National Science Foundation project to make computer programming faster, easier and more intuitive. Dubbed ExCAPE for Expeditions in Computer Augmented Program Engineering, the project is a highly collaborative effort that will involve multiple research institutions, partners in industry and educational outreach to the next generation of computer scientists.

Karen Detlefsen Awarded American Council of Learned Societies 2012 Collaborative Research Fellowship
PHILADELPHIA – Karen Detlefsen, associate professor of philosophy and education at the University of Pennsylvania, is the recipient of a 2012 American Council of Learned Societies Collaborative Research Fellowship. She is among 15 scholars selected to work in groups of two to three on single, substantive projects.

Penn GSE Student Uses Humor to Create Change
David Low is a funny guy. As a teacher in Arizona, he had funny students, and he is convinced they helped get rid of an unnecessary test. Low, a Ph.D. student in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, told the story at a recent meeting for teachers and prospective teachers in suburban Philadelphia.

Center for Africana Studies Hosts Jason Moran as Artist in Residence for Series of Public Master Classes

Penn Biologists Identify a Key Enzyme Involved in Protecting Nerves From Degeneration
PHILADELPHIA –- A new animal model of nerve injury has brought to light a critical role of an enzyme called Nmnat in nerve fiber maintenance and neuroprotection. Understanding biological pathways involved in maintaining healthy nerves and clearing away damaged ones may offer scientists targets for drugs to mitigate neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s and Parkinson’s, as well as aid in situations of acute nerve damage, such as spinal cord injury.

Penn Law festivities mark Golkin Hall Dedication Week
All this week, Penn Law School will celebrate the formal opening of its new, state-of-the-art building: Golkin Hall. The building is named in honor of Penn alumni Perry and Donna Golkin, the lead donors to the approximately $33.5 million project. Designed by architects at the Boston-based firm Kennedy & Violich Architecture, construction of Golkin Hall began in May of 2010.

Duality of Longevity Drug Explained by Penn Medicine Researchers
A Penn- and MIT-led team explained how rapamycin, a drug that extends mouse lifespan, also causes insulin resistance. The researchers showed in an animal model that they could, in principle, separate the effects, which depend on inhibiting two protein complexes, mTORC1 and mTORC2, respectively.The study suggests that molecules that specifically inhibit mTORC1 may combat age-related diseases without the insulin-resistance side effect, which can predispose people to diabetes.
