Penn pianist to star at Symphony Orchestra concert
Penn senior Ellen Hahm may not be a music major, but she has grown up with a great fondness and appreciation for classical music. Since the summer of her sophomore year, she has dreamed of being a featured soloist in the Penn Symphony Orchestra, the University ensemble comprised primarily of non-music majors. On Saturday, Feb. 25, Hahm’s dream will come true when she performs with the Orchestra at 8 p.m. in Irvine Auditorium.

The Office of the Provost has announced the theme for the 2012-2013 academic year: The Year of Proof. Throughout the year, Penn’s schools and academic centers will be encouraged to explore the many facets of intellectual inquiry that define or approximate proof. Possible topics of study include scientific proof, legal evidence, proof of authorship, proof versus faith, and more.

150 years of ‘brothership’
Ask the members of the Glee Club to describe their close camaraderie, and they’ll sum it up in a word: brothership. For the Record: Albert Coombs Barnes
As the Barnes Foundation prepares to move from Merion, Pa. into Philadelphia, it’s fitting to acknowledge the connection of its founder, Albert Coombs Barnes, to Penn. Born in Philadelphia in 1873, Barnes graduated from Philadelphia’s Central High School, which awarded bachelor’s degrees at the time. In 1892, Barnes graduated from Penn’s Medical School, while supporting himself by playing semi-professional baseball. After completing his medical internship, Barnes never practiced as a physician again, but became interested in pharmacology instead.

Artists wanted
The Burrison Gallery, located inside the University Club at the Inn at Penn, is calling for submittals of artwork to be considered for future exhibitions. Any Penn faculty, staff, alumni, or family members may submit work for consideration. Submittal packages should include slides, photos, or CDs of work along with the artist’s bio, including their relationship to Penn and a brief description of the work (medium, technique, intent).

Staff Q&A with Leslie Laird Kruhly
Anyone who has watched a Penn Commencement in the past dozen years knows Leslie Laird Kruhly’s work. She leads the procession of senior administrators, Trustees, and graduates down Locust Walk each May, carrying the University Mace—an ornate, four-pound ceremonial staff.
