Donna Brazile to speak for MLK social justice lecture
Each January, Penn honors the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the Commemorative Symposium on Social Change, a series of community events that highlight the civil rights leader’s life, service and work. This year’s remembrance runs from Friday, Jan. 13 through Friday, Feb. 3.

Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Improves Motion and Mood, Reduces Medications
A new multi-center study, including neurologists and neurosurgeons from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, reveals that Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) – a treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients with medication-resistant muscle movement impairment or tremors – can improve those symptoms and reduce medications for patients implanted with the device. The study appears Online First in Lancet Neurology.

Cindy Christian of Penn’s Field Center Named to Task Force on Child Protection
PHILADELPHIA — Cindy Christian, a faculty co-director at the University of Pennsylvania Field Center for Children’s Policy Practice & Research, has been named to a new 11-member Task Force on Child Protection. The appointment was made by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett.

Penn Geologist Edward Doheny Named to Irish Education 100
PHILADELPHIA — Edward Doheny of the University of Pennsylvania has been named to the 2011 Irish Education 100 by the Irish Voice newspaper. The annual list honors leading educators of Irish descent. Doheny is a lecturer and senior graduate advisor in Penn’s Professional Program in Applied Geoscience in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science. He traces his Irish heritage to County Waterford on his mother’s side and to County Tipperary on his father’s side.

New green machines bring Ice Rink glass-like smoothness
One of the coldest buildings on campus is now one of the hottest, sustainability-wise. The Penn Ice Rink at the Class of 1923 Arena hosts all sorts of ice events, and now will do so more efficiently with a few new green machines. A duo of new ice-resurfacing machines have already been put into service, and with support from the University’s Green Fund the arena will install a new water densification system this spring.

Penn Honors Martin Luther King Jr. With Interfaith Program and Community Awards Commemoration
PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania will honor Martin Luther King Jr. with an Interfaith Program and Awards Commemoration, Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m. in Bodek Lounge of Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce St.
