Rehabilitating soldiers after war
By 1916, the U.S. federal government had spent more than $5 billion on Civil War pensions, more than the cost of the entire four-year war. Established in the second year of the Civil War as a way to recruit Union soldiers, the pension system reassured enlisted men that their wives would receive payment if they were killed, or soldiers would receive a lifetime of financial support if injured.

Researchers make progress in search for elusive Higgs Boson
A machine designed to recreate the conditions just after the Big Bang now stands on the doorstep of a long-awaited discovery. On Tuesday, Dec. 13, researchers at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the $9 billion, 17-mile-long particle accelerator located underground near the French-Swiss border, announced that they had made significant progress in their search for the Higgs Boson, a particle theorized to be responsible for imbuing other particles with mass.

London Calling: Olympic Park South Commission Is a PennDesign Success
James Corner Field Operations (JCFO), the New York-based contemporary design practice led by the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design's James Corner, MLA'86, Professor and Chairman of Landscape Architecture, has won the commission to design the new public spaces in London Olympic Park South.This will be one of the first new public spaces and facilities added to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, which will host events following the 2012 Games.
