Health and social justice
Penn’s School of Nursing and the Perelman School of Medicine present a talk on Nov. 9 from Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet. Horton, who was born in London and qualified in medicine from the University of Birmingham, will discuss “Health and Social Justice: Enemies or Bedfellows” from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Claire M. Fagin Hall, 418 Curie Blvd.

Penn Family Day offers oodles of fun for all
Penn Family Day is not your average "company picnic." From its humble beginnings 19 years ago as a day to treat employees to a free football game and picnic lunch, the annual affair, hosted by Penn Athletics and the Division of Human Resources (HR), has grown into a daylong funfest expected to draw thousands.

HR offers flu shots for Penn faculty and staff
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-choo! Hear that? (Sniffle, sniffle) Feel an itch in the back of your throat? (Cough, cough) It’s right around the corner (or it may already be here): Flu season! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says flu activity in the United States most commonly peaks in January or February. Seasonal flu activity, however, can begin as early as October and continue through May.

Give a little
The University community has until Nov. 3 to participate in the annual Penn’s Way charitable giving campaign. Last year, the campaign raised $1.457 million for local charitable organizations. This year, the campaign seeks to raise $1.35 million in support of three partner organizations: the Center for Responsible Funding, Penn Medicine and United Way.

Penn in the early 1960s was a lonely place for African-American students. There were only about a dozen black students on campus, few, if any, courses on the African-American experience and just one or two black faculty members.

Botswana-UPenn Partnership celebrates its 10th anniversary
When Penn formed a partnership with Botswana’s government and the University of Botswana in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, no one could have imagined its profound impact on the lives of everyone involved. “Ten years ago they were dying and now they are living,” says Heather Calvert, administrator of the Botswana-UPenn Partnership.
