Penn Grad Student Utpal Sandesara to Give Talk at Penn Bookstore on 1979 Machhu Dam Disaster in India
PHILADELPHIA – Utpal Sandesara, who is pursuing a medical degree and doctorate in social anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, will present archival research and first-hand accounts of India’s 1979 Machhu Dam disaster at the Penn Bookstore at 36th and Walnut streets Friday, June 17, at 5 p.m. Sandesara, the son of a Machhu flood survivor, is co-author of "No One Had a Tongue to Speak: The Untold Story of One of History's Deadliest Floods."

Penn’s School of Nursing is establishing a Center for Global Women’s Health effective July 1. Lynn Sommers, professor of medical-surgical nursing at Penn Nursing, will be the new Center’s director.

Penn Researchers Show New Evidence of Genetic “Arms Race” Against Malaria
PHILADELPHIA — For tens of thousands of years, the genomes of malaria parasites and humans have been at war with one another. Now, University of Pennsylvania geneticists, in collaboration with an international team of scientists, have developed a new picture of one way that the human genome has fought back.

Two Penn pitchers drafted by Major League Baseball
For the first time in eight years, two Penn baseball players have been tapped by Major League Baseball during the First-Year Player Draft. Pitchers Paul Cusick, a 2011 Penn graduate, and Vince Voiro, a rising senior, were selected earlier this week by the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres, respectively. Cusick was chosen in the 29th round. Voiro was selected in the 47th round.

Penn Engineers: Two-Dimensional Graphene Metamaterials and One-Atom-Thick Optical Devices
PHILADELPHIA -- Two University of Pennsylvania engineers have proposed the possibility of two-dimensional metamaterials. These one-atom-thick metamaterials could be achieved by controlling the conductivity of sheets of graphene, which is a single layer of carbon atoms.

Finding the roots of memory impairment from sleep deprivation
Anyone who has pulled an all-nighter knows there is a price to be paid the next day: trouble focusing, a fuzzy memory and other cognitive impairments. For students, these impairments might just result in a bad grade. But for professionals in high-risk industries that require long hours of concentration, such as emergency medicine or aviation, sleep deprivation can have life-and-death consequences.

Take sustainability survey about Penn green initiatives
Penn’s Climate Action Plan, launched in September 2009, is the University’s initiative to become a greener campus. The plan outlines five main strategies to reduce Penn’s carbon footprint and enhance sustainable practices: conserve energy, reduce emissions, build green, minimize waste and learn sustainability.

Entertain the kids
If you’re searching for ways to keep your kids entertained this summer, the Morris Arboretum and Penn Museum have got you covered. On Aug. 4 and 11, the Arboretum’s Summer Concert Series features kid-friendly events, sponsored by WXPN. The first, on Aug. 4, features Alex and the Kaleidoscope Band, who perform lively, interactive, world music-infused tunes. The second, on Aug. 11, features Yosi & the Superdads, who will play songs from their award-winning albums, including “Super Kids Rock!” The concerts begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Azalea Meadow.

On display
From June 25 through Aug. 5, the Burrison Gallery will highlight some of the creativity found on campus in the first annual University Club Members exhibit. The show will feature paintings, photography and digital prints. Some of the work on display will be for sale.
