Penn Research Answers Long-Standing Question About Swimming in Elastic Liquids
PHILADELPHIA — A biomechanical experiment conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science has answered a long-standing theoretical question: Will microorganisms swim faster or slower in elastic fluids? For a prevalent type of swimming, undulation, the answer is “slower.”

Penn Libraries to Digitize 17th- and 18th-Century Manuscripts
PHILADELPHIA —The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded Penn’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library a grant of $300,000 to digitize and make available on the World Wide Web a collection of approximately 1,000 European and American manuscripts from 1601 to 1800.

Penn Recognized Nationally as a Top School for Community Service
PHILADELPHIA -– The University of Pennsylvania is among 114 colleges and universities named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Award-Winning Actor Denzel Washington Delivers Penn’s 255th Commencement Address
PHILADELPHIA — Under cloudy skies, Denzel Washington, internationally renowned actor and director, delivered the address at the University of Pennsylvania’s 255th Commencement today, Monday, May 16. Washington is one of the nation’s preeminent performing artists, having achieved wide acclaim for his film, theatrical and television performances, as well as his accomplishments in film directing and television production.

Penn: No Increase in Severe Cardiovascular Events for Children, Adolescents on ADHD Medications
Despite recent concerns that medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) could increase the risk of cardiovascular events in children and adolescents, an observational study conducted by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and HealthCore Inc. finds they are no more likely to die from a severe cardiovascular event than those who do not take the drugs.

Penn GSE, Departments of Education and Commerce Conference Set: Education Technology as an Export
PHILADELPHIA — The Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania has joined forces with the U.S. departments of Commerce and Education to organize the Exporting Education Technology Conference, May 16 at Penn. The conference is designed to promote U.S. exports of education technology and to invite business leaders to offer their thoughts on how government can best assist these efforts.

MFA students exhibit work in Northern Liberties
Emerging artists from the School of Design’s Master of Fine Arts Class of 2011 have one more chance to showcase their work at the MFA Thesis Exhibition, opening today at the Ice Box Project Space in the Crane Arts Building, 1400 N. American St. in Northern Liberties. The featured works include paintings, photographs, sculptures and conceptual pieces created by the 22 graduating students.

Trees begin to take root in Penn Park
Penn Park construction workers are taking advantage of this week’s perfect springtime weather to keep the 24-acre project on track for a fall opening. The park, which lies on the east side of campus between Walnut and South streets, is the centerpiece of the University’s Penn Connects development plan.
