Penn announces two new PIK professors
Penn President Amy Gutmann and Provost Vincent Price recently announced the addition of two new Penn Integrates Knowledge (PIK) professors with the appointments of Barbara Mellers and Philip Tetlock. Mellers is Penn’s 11th PIK professor, Tetlock the 12th. Their appointments are effective Jan. 1, 2011.

Discounted tickets to 'Secrets of the Silk Road' for faculty and staff
As a special holiday treat, the Penn Museum is offering faculty and staff a discount on tickets to the landmark exhibition, “Secrets of the Silk Road,” which runs from Feb. 5 through June 5, 2011.

Penn launches new mobile website at m.upenn.edu
Penn has developed a mobile website enabling users to access information about the University from any handheld device. The browser-based site’s initial offerings include Penn news, as well as information about Penn’s libraries, athletics and public safety. It also offers maps, the University directory, a calendar and a search function.

Penn-led Bioethics Commission makes recommendation on synthetic biology
The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, chaired by Penn President Amy Gutmann, today released its first report—a wide-ranging review of the emerging field of synthetic biology—and made 18 recommendations to President Barack Obama, calling for "prudent vigilance" in regulating the field.

Penn Medicine Establishes Hand Transplant Program
PHILADELPHIA - The Penn Transplant Institute, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) have collaborated to form the Penn Hand Transplant Program.

New Penn Math Research Proves There’s Plenty of Time for Evolution
PHILADELPHIA -- A new mathematical model developed by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has offered even more evidence of the correctness of evolutionary theory. Herbert Wilf, Penn’s Thomas A. Scott Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, and Warren Ewens, emeritus professor of biology, say their model directly challenges the long-standing contention among some doubters that evolution couldn't have happened because the small changes in species outlined by the theory simply would have taken too much time to be completed.

Penn music student creates composition honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe
Last spring, Scott Ordway, a Benjamin Franklin doctoral fellow in Penn’s Music Department, travelled to Mexico City on a research trip. There he found “warmth, beauty, and friendship amidst a backdrop of violence and tragedy.” He also found the muse for his new composition, “Missa Brevis for the Virgin of Guadalupe.”
