Donating warm coats during the winter season
Dear Benny: I have a few coats and scarves that I’d like to donate to families in need for the holiday season. Are there any places in and around the University that accept these donations? —Keeping Warm Dear Winter Warm-up, Once again, Penn is hosting a Winter Coat Drive, an annual event that gives needy adults and children warm outerwear to help battle the winter chill. Through Dec. 10, Penn is accepting donations of gently used items with some serviceable miles still on them. (No threadbare cast-offs, please).

Annenberg, Media Development Stakeholders to Develop Benchmarks on Media Impact in Crisis Situations
PHILADELPHIA (December 1, 2010) – Recognizing that a strong and independent media is an integral building block for peace in developing countries and in countries emerging from crisis, the University of Pennsylvania and several partners are working together to enhance efforts to measure the impact of media interventions in conflict countries. In order to effectively leverage the power of media and communications to combat conflict and crisis, more knowledge is needed about whether and how existing efforts have succeeded and failed.

Makuu celebrates decade of cultural and academic support
Makuu Black Cultural Center means "home" or "headquarters" in Swahili. The name is fitting, because “home” is the word many students use to describe what Makuu means to them. For 10 years, Makuu has provided resources for academic and personal support to black students from across the United States as well as those from the Caribbean, Africa and the West Indies.

Color-Changing “Blast Badge” Detects Exposure to Explosive Shock Waves
PHILADELPHIA - Mimicking the reflective iridescence of a butterfly's wing, investigators at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have developed a color-changing patch that could be worn on soldiers' helmets and uniforms to indicate the strength of exposure to blasts from explosives in the field.

First Blood Test to Determine Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson’s Disease Developed at Penn
PHILADELPHIA –Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine’s Udall Center for Parkinson's Research have developed the first blood-based biomarker test to predict cognitive decline in Parkinson’s disease (PD). If results can be replicated and standardized in other Parkinson patients, by other investigators, the test could be a useful tool to use in selecting patients for the development of new drugs that can slow or prevent this complication of the disease.

Horse-Dragon and Colossal Iguana: Penn Grad Student, Others Identify New Beaked Herbivorous Dinosaurs
PHILADELPHIA – Paleontologists from the University of Pennsylvania and the Utah Geological Survey have described two skeletons representing two new species of beaked herbivorous dinosaurs, known as iguanodonts, from Utah. The new dinosaurs were preserved in rocks dating to the Early Cretaceous Epoch, ~145.5 – 99.6 million years ago. The new specimens help illuminate the natural history of North American iguanodonts.
