Deadline is Feb. 1 for Submitting Arts Grant Applications
PHILADELPHIA –- Applications will be accepted through Feb. 1 for the spring 2010 round of arts grants, made available as part of the University of Pennsylvania’s Arts and the City Year celebration. This program will award up to $750 to arts projects scheduled for February through April.

Penn, Georgia Collaboration Awarded $14.6 Million to Expand Pathogen Database, Expedite Worldwide Research
PHILADELPHIA -– Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Georgia have been awarded a five-year, $14.6 million contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the US National Institutes of Health, to expand and extend work on the Eukaryotic Pathogen Genome Database Resource, http://EuPathDB.org. This revolutionary open database enables scientists to examine genes, genomes, isolates, and other attributes related to a variety of important human pathogens.

Working like a dog
Because a dog’s sense of smell is a thousand times more sensitive than a human’s, canines are regularly used to detect bombs and other explosives. They sniff out illegal drugs and endangered plants, and they can use their snouts to reveal ailments such as cancer, diabetes and seizures.
