Penn Assistant Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology Aaron Gitler has used yeast cells (pictured) to replicate the way a disease protein responsible for the development of ALS acts in humans. In humans, the effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may take decades to develop. Studying the progression of this disease, then, has proven to be difficult.

PHILADELPHIA- – The Center for Computer Graphics at the University of Pennsylvania is partnering with Susquehanna International Group LLP to build a new computer graphics center and gallery for the program, as well as create the largest academic motion-capture studio in the region.

PHILADELPHIA –- Carolyn Abbate, who ranks among the world’s foremost musicologists, has been appointed the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of Pennsylvania, effective July 1. Abbate comes to Penn from Harvard University where she is the Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and the Fanny Peabody Professor of Music.

WHAT:The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will hold a K-9 search training session in the basement of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine today.The event is a demonstration for veterinary students and faculty, as well as a training session for explosive-detecting dogs. PHILADELPHIA –- Jeffrey Cooper, chief counsel for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and executive deputy general counsel in Gov. Edward Rendell’s administration, will become the University of Pennsylvania’s vice president for government and community affairs, Penn President Amy Gutmann has announced. He will assume his new position July 1.

PHILADELPHIA –- A University of Pennsylvania Law School group is recommending ways to implement the Agreement on Justice and Accountability between the Ugandan government and the Lord’s Resistance Army rebel group. Twelve Penn Law students and a professor, William Burke-White, are making the recommendations in a report on behalf of the Ugandan government.

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania is increasing its use of renewable wind energy during the next two years, earning the University the rank of top consumer of wind energy among institutions of higher education across the nation, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
