PHILADELPHIA -- The Alice Paul Center for Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality at the University of Pennsylvania will host an international conference, "Gender, War, and Militarism," Oct. 25-26 at Penn. "This event will be the first truly major conference to consider the crucial gender-related issues in contemporary conflicts including genocidal rape, women and child soldiers and women as peace activists and is, by far, the most international in scope to date," Shannon Lundeen, associate director of the Center, said.

PHILADELPHIA -- Partha Chatterjee, professor of anthropology at Columbia University and at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences in Kolkata, will give the inaugural lecture of the Nand and Jeet Khemka Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Pennsylvania Oct. 3.Chatterjee will speak on "Democracy and Economic Transformation in India." The lecture will be at 5 p.m. in the Terrace Room of Logan Hall, 249 S. 36th St. A reception will follow.

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania will name its Center for Community Partnerships for Edward Netter, a 1953 graduate of Penn's College, and his wife, Barbara, in recognition of their commitments of more than $10 million.

PHILADELPHIA - Toddlers are learning language skills earlier than expected and by the age of 18 months understand enough of the lexicon of their own language to recognize how speakers use sounds to convey meaning.They also ignore sounds that don't play a significant role in speaking their native tongue, according to a study by a University of Pennsylvania psychologist.

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania's Arthur Ross Gallery will present "Treasured Pages: Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts from the Free Library of Philadelphia" beginning Oct. 13 and running through Jan. 6. The exhibition features 43 codices and single leaves from one of the most significant collections in the United States. The exhibition is a rare opportunity to view hidden treasures that provide a glimpse into medieval intellectual and artistic culture.

PHILADELPHIA -- Adolph Reed, professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, is the most cited black political scientist in the just published Journal of Blacks in Higher Education's Annual Citation Rankings of Black Scholars. With 59 citations, Reed holds the 14th spot overall in the JBHE Citation Rankings of Black Scholars in the Social Sciences and Humanities and is tied for the 16th spot overall with David Levering Lewis of New York University in the JBHE Citation Rankings of Black Scholars in the Arts and Humanities.

WHAT: The 3,050-mile Bucknell-Penn Alumni Bike Race Across America for Scholarship, the first such effort by a group of University of Pennsylvania and Bucknell University alumni to raise $1 million in scholarship funds for each school to support outstanding students from low-income backgroundsThe race, which also honors the memory of Ed Zolla, a 1968 graduate of Penn's Wharton School who had planned to make this ride, began Sept. 9 in Santa Monica, Calif., and ends for the Penn riders on Thursday, Sept. 27, with a grand entrance onto the Penn campus.
