PHILADELPHIA -- Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have found a link between some of the world's most common parasites that cause infection and disease throughout the developing world and their attraction to a chemical secreted from human and animal skin.These skin-penetrating parasites infect more than 600 million people worldwide and contribute to anemia, ill health and poor physical and cognitive development among children of developing nations.

This summer, take a break from your normal Wednesday lunch routine to learn the basics of CranioSacral therapy, healthy grilling and yoga. The Wellness Wednesdays workshop series is back, along with therapeutic massage every Tuesday and Thursday and Reiki on Mondays and Wednesdays. “Initially, the idea was to offer something nice to our colleagues,” says Susan Villari, director of the Office of Health Education, which sponsors the workshop series from June through August. “It’s just a treat—summer is the time you can take advantage of things.”

PHILADELPHIA - Michael J. Cleare has been named associate vice provost for research and executive director of the Center for Technology Transfer at the University of Pennsylvania. Cleare will join Penn Aug. 1 from Columbia University, where he is serving as executive director of Science and Technology Ventures.

PHILADELPHIA - In conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania, University Partners, a developer of student housing, has begun construction on The Radian in the 3900 block of Walnut Street.Scheduled to open in August 2008, the $50 million-plus building will feature a 14-story, 150-plus unit apartment community as well as more than 40,000 square feet of street- and mezzanine-level retail. Its construction will include environmentally friendly energy features.

WHAT: Dedication of Philadelphia's latest public art project, "Wave Forms," designed by New York artist Dennis Oppenheim. The work incorporates the 20,000-square-foot plaza and courtyard of the Domus residential complex, adjacent to the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, featuring lighting, hardscape and landscape in patterns of sound waves, as well as six aluminum and mesh bells, weighing a total of eight and a half tons, that will be eventually enveloped in foliage.

PHILADELPHIA -- Josh Mosley, a professor in the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design, is among the select artists who will show their work at the Venice Biennale's 52nd International Art Exhibition. Mosley is a Penn professor of fine arts, animation and digital media and also a fellow at the American Academy in Rome. He will exhibit his new work, "dread," featuring mixed media animation about philosophers Blaise Pascal and Jean-Jacques Rousseau during a nature walk in which they are not able to resolve their perspectives on the nature of things.

PHILADELPHIA -- Biologists at the University of Pennsylvania have found a link between a recently discovered protein in the brain and the nervous system's duty to regulate respiration.For decades, researchers have investigated how the brain "unconsciously" controls breathing, a chemical and electrical process considered automatic in the mammalian world.

PHILADELPHIA -- Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have created low-density aerogels made from carbon nanotubes, CNTs, that are capable of supporting 8,000 times their own weight. The new material also combines the strength and ultra-light, heat-insulating properties of aerogels with the electrical conductivity of nanotubes.
