When Ginny Greene and her colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology opened boxes from the Civic Center Museum, they found items as wildly diverse as coconuts, fibers and textiles nestled side by side. The variety was staggering. Now, months after hand-selecting which items from the Civic Center Museum collection to incorporate into the Museum’s own, Senior Conservator Greene is working with Registrar Xiuqin Zhou and keepers from different sections on an object-by-object inventory, cataloguing and organizing the newly acquired items.

No one is quite sure why ivy became synonymous with academia, but we know when Penn’s ivy traditions began—in 1873, the year the University moved to West Philadelphia. If early photographs are accurate, the campus looks barren and windswept and the urge to plant the evergreen vine, genus Hedera, seems inspired.

The School of Arts and Sciences’ long dream of establishing a cinema studies major has taken one giant step forward with the addition of Timothy Corrigan, professor of English, to the faculty this past fall. As the new director of the Film Studies Program in the College, Corrigan will be the primary person responsible for the crafting of the major, which will draw on SAS faculty already engaged in the study of film. “There are a variety of faculty from other departments involved in film studies, and we’re all working to expand its presence at Penn,” he said.

PHILADELPHIA -- David Ferreira, a University of Pennsylvania senior from Hamilton, Bermuda, has been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. He plans to pursue a Bachelor of Laws degree in his first two years at Oxford University in England, followed by a Master of Jurisprudence in his final year. Approximately 95 Rhodes scholars are named annually with non-U.S. Rhodes scholars selected from 18 international jurisdictions around the world. Bermuda names only one Rhodes Scholar each year.

PHILADELPHIA -- Becoming an adult takes longer today than in previous decades, with many not achieving all the traditional markers -- starting a career, forming a new household, starting a family -- until after age 30, according to a study by the Network on Transitions to Adulthood. The Network, funded by the MacArthur Foundation, is directed by Frank Furstenberg, professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania.

PHILADELPHIA -- The School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania will offer free dental care for children aged 5-12 on Friday, Feb. 6, as a part of the School's participation in the American Dental Association's "Give Kids a Smile Day."A limited number of appointments are available at 10 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. by calling 215-746-4096. Parents must accompany their children to the Schattner Center, 240 S. 40th St., Philadelphia, where the care will be administered.

PHILADELPHIA -- "Antique Rugs of the Turkmen Tribes: Masterpieces from the Philadelphia Private Collections" will be on display Jan. 16 through April 4 at the Arthur Ross Gallery, 220 S. 34th St., Philadelphia.The Arthur Ross Gallery is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, noon-5 p.m. Exhibitions are free and open to the public.Rarely exhibited together due to their large size, "Antique Rugs of the Turkmen Tribes" brings together several Turkmen main carpets, as well as other trappings and smaller utilitarian pieces that date from 1800-1875.

WHO: The staff at the University of Pennsylvania's Office of Community Housing will deliver holiday gifts for children and adults in 21 families at two West Philadelphia shelters.WHAT: Donations of newly purchased coats, shoes, pants, shirts, toys and even a Christmas tree with decorations were given by 75 sponsors from the Penn community and outside groups.
