Peter Hicks (W’01) was walking down Locust Walk his freshman year when he saw a sign for the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project (WPTP) and signed up. Maybe he signed up because he liked working with kids. Or maybe it was the perfect antidote for a young man who came to the East Coast from Minneapolis and its suburbs and found a chilly way of life in Philadelphia. “People are much nicer in the Midwest. At Penn, if you don’t know someone, you don’t make eye contact, you don’t say hello,” he said.

Eduardo Glandt, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science since last November, is outgoing and charming. But underneath that international charm — he’s a native of Argentina — are plans to recruit top-notch faculty, push hot fields like nanotechnology and computational science, and bring the school a global perspective. Widely respected by his faculty peers, he came to the job with the advantage of having a year to practice the job as interim dean.

Before dozens of diplomats and dignitaries, Director of Libraries Paul Mosher proudly acknowledged the University of Pennsylvania Library’s acquisition of its 5 millionth volume. All 273 of them. “Since I’m the director, I can say that all of these gifts together constitute our 5 millionth volume,” Mosher told the audience at a Nov. 13 reception in Van Pelt-Dietrich Library commemorating the milestone.

“Live rich, die poor. Never make the mistake of doing it the other way around. Thus spoke Vartan Gregorian, quoting prominent philanthropist Walter Annenberg (W’31,Hon’66). This was the tone of the Ninth Annual Walter and Lenore Annenberg Distinguished Lecture in Communication, as Gregorian recounted the history of American philanthropy. Gregorian began at Penn in 1972 as a history professor, became the founding dean of the School of Arts and Sciences in 1974, and finally ascended to provost in 1978.

Professor Christopher Edley of Harvard Law School delivered this year’s A. Leon Higginbotham Memorial Lecture on Nov. 15 at the Law School. Entitled “Integration, Affirmative Action and Beyond: Defining a Racial Justice Agenda for a New Time,” Edley’s speech outlined his vision for the future of the movement for racial equality. There’s also a special event — a week-long celebration of Rounder Records on the label’s 30th anniversary. The Architecural Conservation Laboratory and Research Center of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation in the Graduate School of Fine Arts has received a federal grant of $800,000 to study and conserve the Native American cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. The dwellings are among the most significant and renowned of ancestral pueblo sites.

The Philadelphia Dance Company — Philadanco! to its legions of fans around the world — kicks off the holiday season with a performance at the Annenberg Center Dec. 7-9. The program features the world premiere of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” a new work by internationally renowned choreographer Daniel Ezralow, whose recent work includes the choreography for Ron Howard’s film “The Grinch.” Given the passion and energy of Philadanco, this promises to be a magical event indeed.
