John Dixon Hunt 288 pages, 138 black-and-white illustrations, $35 cloth Gardening is usually thought of as a practical activity, but a new book by John Dixon Hunt, professor of landscape architecture and chair of the department of landscape architecture and regional planning, explores the conceptual basis of garden art. The book takes a large-scale view of the garden in human culture and treats the garden as the epitome of place-making — or what is nowadays termed landscape architecture.

PHILADELPHIA --- William H. Danforth, M.D., chancellor emeritus and vice chair of the board of trustees at Washington University in St. Louis, will serve as chair of an independent review panel that will conduct a comprehensive review of oversight and monitoring of clinical trials at the Institute for Human Gene Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania, according to President Judith Rodin.

PHILADELPHIA - Christopher H. Browne, chairman of the Board of Overseers of the School of Arts and Sciences and a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, has made a gift of $10 million to the University, according to an announcement today by University President Judith Rodin. The gift will be used to fund five professorships to be known as the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professors in the School of Arts and Sciences.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Institute for Human Gene Therapy (IHGT) at the University of Pennsylvania was notified today (Jan. 21) by the FDA that the agency was suspending eight Investigational New Drug Applications (INDs) previously issued to IHGT and pursuant to which IHGT was conducting five active clinical trials in cystic fibrosis, mesothelioma, melanoma and breast cancer, muscular dystrophy and glioma. In its letter, the FDA said that it took this action in light of its recent inspection related to the OTC clinical trial.

Martha Priddy Patterson 320 pages, $19.95 paper A recent review in USA Today put Martha Priddy Patterson’s goal succinctly: “‘The New Working Woman’s Guide to Retirement Planning’ is a wake-up call for women.” Patterson, director of benefits analysis for Deloitte and Touche, wrote this straightforward and easy-to-follow guide to retirement planning for women because she noted several facts: Only 21 percent of working women over 40 expect to receive, or are receiving, retirement benefits.

Since last spring, Sound Horse Technologies has been marketing a better horseshoe. Based on the work of the School of Veterinary Medicine’s Dr. Robert Sigafoos and others, the shoe is glued onto a horse’s foot rather than being nailed on, and it prevents horses from going lame. The fledgling company is doing well. “The reason the business is so successful is because I’m not directly involved,” Sigafoos said. “The inventing part is the easy part. Getting an idea from being an invention to getting it into the marketplace takes the real knowledge.”

With 14,000 people clamoring for its 1,080 modems, the University’s modem pool is “facing technological obsolescence.” That was the message Jim O’Donnell, Vice Provost of Information Systems and Computing and Professor of Classical Studies, told a near-capacity crowd gathered at College Hall Dec. 1 to discuss a proposal to close down its modem pool by July 1, 2001.
