Research at Penn Web Site Wins CASE Silver Medal
PHILADELPHIA The Research at Penn Web site, developed to share research advances from the University of Pennsylvanias 4,300 faculty researchers, has been awarded a silver medal by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Desmond Tutu, Wolf Blitzer, Ed Rendell Among Speakers at Penn Commencement Ceremonies
PHILADELPHIA Anti-apartheid activist Desmond Tutu, CNN news anchor Wolf Blitzer and notable Penn alumni, including Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, are among the dignitaries who will address graduates at the various University of Pennsylvania commencement ceremonies May 18-19.Desmond Tutu will deliver the address Monday, May 19, at Penns 247th commencement ceremony at Franklin Field, 33rd and Spruce streets. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m.

New Virtual Reality Array Allows Immersive Experience Without the Disorienting 3-D Goggles
PHILADELPHIA The University of Pennsylvania has installed a virtual reality system that allows a participant full-body interaction with a virtual environment without the hassle of bulky, dizzying 3-D glasses. The system will be demonstrated for journalists and others Thursday, May 15.

New Director Appointed at Kelly Writers House

Plant Biologist Anthony Cashmore Elected to National Academy of Sciences
PHILADELPHIA University of Pennsylvania biologist Anthony R. Cashmore has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences, one of 72 American scientists newly recognized for their distinguished re-search achievements.Election to the NAS is considered one of the highest honors accorded U.S. scientists and engineers. Including Cashmore, 38 Penn researchers are now NAS members.

Muller named Penn Health System CEO
Ralph W. Muller has been named chief executive officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, effective July 1. Muller, 57, served from 1986 to 2001 as president and chief executive officer of the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System. While at Chicago, he brought a virtually bankrupt hospital back to fiscal health and oversaw a major construction campaign that culminated in a new, state-of-the-art ambulatory care center and a new children’s hospital, set to open in 2004.
