Feb. 17, 2005

PHILADELPHIA JoAnn McCarthy has been appointed Assistant Provost for International Affairs at the University of Pennsylvania.  She assumes her new position March 1.

McCarthy will work closely with Penn President Amy Gutmann, the provost and deans to develop and implement the University's global strategy. She will oversee Penn's initiatives for increasing visibility in the international arena and provide leadership to move Penn's international agenda forward.

"The University has a long and distinguished history in U.S. higher education, and its faculty is second to none in its global reach and impact," McCarthy said.   "President Gutmann's vision of 'global eminence' for Penn is an attainable goal, and I look forward to working with the various colleges and centers to address this exciting challenge."

She comes to Penn from the University of South Florida, where she was dean of international affairs.

"Dr. McCarthy brings the experience, wisdom and personal skills to help guide the University as we plan our international future," said Interim Provost Peter Conn.  "She brings a rare combination of academic and administrative credentials to this position."
