University Mourns Loss of Justin Hamano

Dear members of the Penn Law community:

It is with sadness we write that Justin Hamano, L’18, passed away over the weekend at his residence off campus. We deeply regret and are saddened by this difficult news and we want each of you to know that the Penn Law family, and indeed, the entire campus community, stands with you in support.

Justin, 31, completed his undergraduate studies at New York University. He worked as a paralegal and labor organizer before starting Penn Law. He also held a master’s certificate in Labor Studies from CUNY.

Some of you may have known Justin from his winning the 2016 Peggy Browning Fellowship, which enabled him to spend a summer working at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in Washington, D.C. Others may recall his roles as Political Director of Lambda Law, Deputy Voting Rights Director of the Democracy Project, and a senior editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.

Justin’s network was broad, and his loss will impact many. A support session for the community will be held today at noon in Silverman 245, the Levy Conference Room, at the Law School.

Now, then, and after, please know that Penn is here to help. Do not hesitate to utilize the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) clinician hours inside the Law School on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-7 pm in T410, or visit or call CAPS at 3624 Market Street. Faculty, staff, and other advisors stand ready to assist you with any need or concern.
