2 Former Politicians, Now College Chiefs, Lament the Pace of Academe

Two of the nation’s highest-profile nontraditional university presidents expressed frustration on Monday with the slow pace of change in academe and lamented faltering public support for higher education. Mitchell E. Daniels Jr., president of Purdue University, and Janet A. Napolitano, who heads the University of California system, shared the dais during a wide-ranging session at the American Council on Education’s 97th annual meeting. The panel was moderated by Robert L. Caret, president of the University of Massachusetts system. (Mr. Caret has been selected as the next chancellor of the University System of Maryland, where he is expected to take office on July 1.)
