The Scramble to Save An Aging Student Aid Program
A bipartisan coalition in Congress is working to save a federal loan program for the neediest college students that is set to end next week. But some education experts and lawmakers say it may be time to let the Federal Perkins Loan Program die. This week, Reps. Mike Bishop (R-Mich.) and Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), with the support of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, introduced legislation to extend Perkins for a year. Four members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, including Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), also put forth a resolution supporting the continuation of the program.
