Some students and alumni at New York University’s newly renamed engineering school in Brooklyn are criticizing the name change, which was announced this week to honor a gift from a university trustee. On Monday, then-NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering said it was getting a $100 million contribution from Chandrika Tandon, a musician and NYU trustee, and her husband, Ranjan Tandon, and changing its name to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, effective immediately. “We were not consulted,” said David Stancu, a junior at the engineering school, who signed a petition fighting the change. “We just woke up to the new name and $100 million. I do not want to sound ungrateful…[but] the issue rises from the way NYU has shown disrespect to our legacy.”
