Students Protest School Renaming After $100 Million Gift

A $100 million donation? Thanks—but not with strings attached. Some students and alumni at New York University’s newly renamed engineering school in Brooklyn are criticizing the name change, which was announced this week to honor a gift from a university trustee. On Monday, then-NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering said it was getting a $100 million contribution from Chandrika Tandon, a musician and NYU trustee, and her husband, Ranjan Tandon, and changing its name to the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, effective immediately. “We were not consulted,” said David Stancu, a junior at the engineering school, who signed a petition fighting the change. “We just woke up to the new name and $100 million. I do not want to sound ungrateful…[but] the issue rises from the way NYU has shown disrespect to our legacy.”
