Students Set a New Course With Off-Beat Majors
Lauren Kay’s path to becoming a high-tech entrepreneur didn’t start with a sensible college major, such as computer science or finance. Instead, the 26-year-old founder of a subscription dating website designed her own major at Brown University. She called it “love.” “I definitely wondered if it was crazy,” Ms. Kay said. “But I had followed the do-gooder straight path my entire life, and it was time for a chance.” So far, that chance seems to have paid off: In its first two years, her site, Dating Ring, attracted more than $350,000 in venture capital, including investments from tech incubator YCombinator.
