U. of California President Orders Tougher Response to Alleged Sexual Misconduct
Reacting to the latest allegation of sexual harassment by a senior faculty member of a subordinate, the University of California’s president, Janet Napolitano, said in a letter on Friday to all 10 chancellors of the university system that UC must henceforth respond to such cases “firmly, fairly, and expeditiously” and that the university must impose “appropriate sanctions” that “recognize the serious nature of these claims,” reports the Los Angeles Times. Ms. Napolitano issued her letter one day after the dean of the Berkeley campus’s law school, Sujit Choudhry, resigned his post after being accused of sexually harassing his executive assistant. Berkeley has drawn sharp criticism over its handling of the accusations against Mr. Choudhry. After finding that he had indeed sexually harassed the assistant, the university first imposed penalties widely regarded as lenient. It was only when the assistant filed a lawsuit this past week, and her accusations became public, that Berkeley put Mr. Choudhry on leave.
