Francesca Sinacori attended an orientation for parents of newly minted University of Massachusetts at Amherst students in June 2012. Her son had just enrolled as a freshman there, and though she was nervous about him leaving home, she felt comfortable. The college had its own police department with sworn officers — her son would be safe.
