PHILADELPHIA –- Geoffrey Canada, president of the Harlem Children’s Zone, which provides educational, social and medical services to children in that New York City neighborhood, will deliver the address at the University of Pennsylvania’s 256th commencement on Monday, May 14.

Both fraternities and sororities have played a significant role in student life at Penn for more than 150 years. Fraternities established chapters at Penn’s first campus in Center City Philadelphia, beginning in 1849. The motto of Psi Upsilon, one of the first Greek organizations at Penn, was: “To us has befallen a mighty friendship.”

As the Barnes Foundation prepares to move from Merion, Pa. into Philadelphia, it’s fitting to acknowledge the connection of its founder, Albert Coombs Barnes, to Penn.
