(This is the first in a series of features introducing the inaugural Penn President's Engagement Prize winners.)   As a young student growing up in Tarkwa Breman, a rural village in Ghana, Shadrack Frimpong was surrounded by many bright peers, both male and female. But as the years passed, many of the female students stopped coming to school. 

By Madeleine Stone  @themadstone Collaboration across scientific disciplines can lead to groundbreaking innovation. But, just as it takes a special type of scholar to cross academic boundaries, it takes a special type of building to make interdisciplinary alliances possible.

“In today’s world, the stereotype of the nerdy scientist, by himself, looking at a microscope, is no longer accurate and no longer useful,” says Gabriel Innes, a third-year student in the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.

As an environmental studies major at the University of Pennsylvania, Kinsey Miller already knew about many sustainability issues. But, after spending the summer as a researcher in the Penn Green Campus Partnership’s Integrating Sustainability Across the Curriculum program, her interests have expanded further.

Penn IUR has recently published two reports about rapid urbanization.

On a Wednesday afternoon in the Cobbs Creek Environmental Education Center, a group gathered around a large table covered in maps and photos.

The Kleinman Center for Energy Policy has been established at PennDesign with a $10 million gift from Scott, C’94, W’94, and Wendy Kleinman. The Center, which is scheduled to launch in Fall 2014, will advance energy productivity by reframing the relationship between research and practice in support of policy innovation.
