The Politics of Privies
The Politics of PriviesDonald Dostie, a Ph.D. candidate in history at Temple University, will share insights from his dissertation, “Necessary Steps: Urban Privies, Social Anxieties, and the Remaking of Philadelphia, 1793-1854.” During this session, hosted by the McNeil Center for Early American Studies, attendees will look at urban Philadelphians’ relationship with the outdoor privy to examine evolving understandings of propriety, privacy, property, community, health, and state power.
