The fellows will produce an arts/journalism project called “Engine 30“ Nov. 8-18. They’ll collaborate in a “pop-up newsroom” with arts editors and reporters from the The Los Angeles Times, KCET-TV’s “Artbound” and “Departures” programs, KPCC-FM and 16 students in USC Annenberg’s arts journalism masters program.
Broussard, who teaches creative writing at Penn, is a contributing editor of the online magazine Hidden City Philadelphia. A former features editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer, she has written for Harper's, The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, Slate.com, The Chicago Reader, The Philadelphia City Paper and Philadelphia magazine. Broussard is the editor of two fiction anthologies, including The Encyclopedia of Exes.
“Engine 30” is the latest in a series of experimental USC Annenberg/Getty arts journalism projects. Last year, “Engine 29” involved 28 arts journalists who used gaming, crowd-sourcing, community engagement, slow journalism, meta-data, distributed storytelling, incremental journalism and social media as tools for covering the arts. The 2010 “Engine 28” project was a pop-up newsroom of 40 journalists who produced more than 100 stories about two theater festivals in a week.
