Carol Muller is an ethnomusicology professor and a South African native who has published widely on South African music. She will discuss her class "Listening to World Music." Penn offers the online class via Coursera.  Selections in the syllabus run the gamut: Paul Simon’s “Graceland,” pieces performed by Tuvan Throat Singers from Russia, Pygmy Pop music, work by the Australian Aboriginal group Yothu 

Yindi and the music of Cuba as popularized in the 1999 documentary “Buena Vista Social Club.” 

The talk will focus on what can be learned by opening the classroom to the world, learning as 24/7 access and engagement what translates and what doesn't and changes in the works for the next iteration of the class, which in its first run captured the imagination of more than 37,000 learners. 

The talk is part of the Lightbulb Café, a free public-lecture series presented by the School of Arts and Sciences and the Office of University Communications that takes arts, humanities and social-sciences scholarship out of the classroom for a night on the town.
