The University of Pennsylvania’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service begins with a welcome breakfast for volunteers on Jan. 15 at 8:30 a.m. in Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce St.
Activities include creating audiobooks through the Penn Reads literacy project, making gift bags that will be donated to West Philadelphia area shelters and a clothing drive to collect professional attire for women re-entering the workplace.
From 11 a.m. to noon in Houston Hall's Hall of Flags, the “Finding Your Path to STEM” panel discussion will welcome high school students to learn about career opportunities involving science, technology, engineering, math and medicine. In addition, volunteers will have the opportunity to clean, paint and beautify designated off-campus sites across West Philadelphia, including the Laura Sims Skate House at 63rd and Walnut streets, Lea Elementary School at 4700 Locust St. and S.W. Weir Elementary School at 5500 Kingsessing Ave.
At 7 p.m., the annual Candlelight Vigil procession will begin at W.E.B. Du Bois College House, 3900 Walnut St., and continue to College Green in front of College Hall.
All events are free and open to the public.
