Fracking involves pumping large amounts of water into underground rocks to release the natural gas stored within. When this water returns to the surface, it brings with it contaminants, including oils, salts, and heavy metals.

International hackers come to campus for PennApps
Each semester, top collegiate hackers from around the world convene in Penn’s Engineering quad for a weekend of nonstop coding. PennApps, the nation’s largest and most prestigious student-run hackathon, marked its 10th edition on Sept. 12-14, with more than 1,200 student hackers.

AppItUp Challenge returns for second year
Last fall, the Penn Center for Innovation (PCI) launched the AppItUP Challenge, a contest that collected mobile app ideas from across the University and helped bring the best ones to life. The 2013 challenge yielded 185 ideas from 11 of Penn’s 12 schools.
